Settlement negotiations typically begin after you've reached maximum medical improvement (MMI)—the point where your condition has stabilized and your doctors can project your future medical needs. At that point, your attorney sends a demand letter to the insurance company outlining your damages. Starting negotiations too early can result in undervaluing your claim because the full extent of your injuries isn't yet known. In some cases, preliminary discussions may occur earlier, but serious negotiations happen once your medical picture is complete.
